Campbell Veterans Nursing Home.Born in Anderson, SC on March 12, 1933, Mr. McCollum was the son of the late Monroe McCollum and Willie Evans McCollum. He served in the United States Army Airborne Division during the Korean War. He was a life member of the 82nd Airborne Palmetto Division. He was retired from Singer Manufacturing with 22 years of service and also was formerly employed for Anderson Mill and Wamsutta Mill. He played baseball with the Baseball Textile League and the American Legion League. He was a member of Garner Memorial Baptist Church, where he was a former Deacon, Outreach Director, Choir Member and President of the Brotherhood. Survivors include his wife, of 55 years, Olga Whitten McCollum of the home; niece, Stacey Whitten Collier, raised in the home and her husband, Joseph and their children, Kaleb, Jacob, Breanna; sisters, Maybelle Freeman of Easley, Louise Miller of Anderson, Frances Shackleford and her husband, Bobby of Winston Salem, NC and Linda Nichols and her husband, Billy of Fayetteville, NC and mother-in-law, Nellie Whitten. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Gerald Edwin McCollum and a sister, Betty Bridges.The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, February 19, 2009 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by the Reverend Steve Motes and Reverend Dewayne Peoples. Interment will follow in M. J. 'Dolly' Cooper Veterans Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Campbell Patriots Honor Guard.The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6-8 pm.The family will be at the residenceA message of condolence may be sent to the family by visitingwww.mcdougaldfuneralhome.comThe McDougald Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
