Obituary

Lonita Hall died on April 26, 2021. She was 90 years old and lived a very active life until her final year-and-half. She was married for 65 years to Robert Carroll Hall until his death in 2015. She was born in Anderson County and grew up on a farm in Taylors, SC. She was the fifth of six children and lived the longest. Even though raised on the farm, her family also worked in cotton mills and in the trucking industry. She grew only knowing hard work and a strong will. If you knew Lonita you knew what she thought and what she thought was clearly to her the right thing. Her strong will was sometimes difficult, but most of the time it was the driving force to fix a cake for a neighbor, pick up a friend to take to eat out, or make sure everything around her was cleaned up and in its place. Nita and Bob, as they were often called, were also called mom and dad, grandma and granddad, and great grandma and great granddad. Lonita is survived by her two children and their families, Joan Sollee of West Columbia, SC and The Rev. Dr. Robert Randy Hall of Raleigh, NC. Lonita has four grandchildren and two step grandchildren and their families, which gave her six great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild. Up in to her late eighties, you would find her on the floor playing with her great grandchildren; she needed no help getting down or back up. She would get up to make sure each family member had a favorite food that Lonita would cook especially for their visit. Her fried chicken and chicken and dumplings were always a hit. Her mac and cheese and cream corn were staples. Her chocolate cake and lemon cake could not be resisted. In her later years, she cooked far less and would enjoy eating out. Even though the food was not as good as her cooking (you didn't have to ask she always made that clear as she ate her meal), she was always glad that there was not a kitchen to clean up. The final two years found Lonita in a different role. Her cancer and the restrictions of the pandemic greatly limited her activity. It was in these years that she allowed others to do for her. Lonita's neighbors and friends from the community watched out for her and also watched as this active woman aged to a slow crawl. The family will always be grateful to those who stepped in during this time and adopted her as mother and grandmother. Lonita was an active and faithful member of Nell Townsend Presbyterian Church. This church was not only a place where she connected to her God; it was the place where she had some of her closest friendships. Like with her biological siblings, Lonita outlived most of her closest adopted brothers and sisters from her faith community. Nell Townsend's covered dish gatherings have not been the same since Lonita stopped bringing her chicken and dumplings. A service of remembrance will be held on April 29, 2021 at 11:00 am at The McDougald Funeral Home with entombment to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Veterans Mausoleum. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 9:45-10:45 am. The family requests in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Society and to Interim Hospice or your local hospice. The care-givers from these organizations also adopted Lonita and Bob and the family will always be grateful. If today you cook a favorite food for someone, clean your house or your yard, say a prayer for a family member or neighbor, or call a friend who is slowing down, please do this in memory of Lonita. Because if she could, she would already be up and doing these things and more.
