Obituary

Sara Louise "Lou" Rice Campbell, beloved wife, Mama, and Grammie, passed into eternal life on October 28, 2025, at the age of 94. Louise "Lou" was born on July 10, 1931, in Plum Branch, South Carolina, to Carrie Belle Stevens Rice and Edwin Clough Rice. Lou experienced a wonderful childhood in a home near the Methodist church with her older sister and dear friend Carolyn, and her brother Edwin.

It was during sixth grade at the De La Howe swimming pool that Lou caught the eye of Albert M. Campbell, who wishfully asked for her name. Flattered, Lou jumped into the pool without responding—and that was how their story began. Married in 1953, Lou and Al moved around with the Army before settling in the family home on the farm at the top of "High C" Drive. The farm was Al's dream come true, and Lou's greatest joy was making it a home for her four children, Bert (Gretchen) Campbell, Margaret (Mark) Edwards, Clough (Lisa) Campbell, and Blake (Laura) Campbell. Today, the Campbell family has grown to include twelve grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren.

Those who were fortunate to know Lou through the years were blessed by her quick wit, kind spirit, church work, piano playing, and friendship. But those who knew her as "Mama" and "Grammie" have the sweetest stories to tell—Fourth of July parades when Grammie, wearing a red nose, would drive up the farm road in the Camaro piled high with grandchildren; Christmases with Grammie's fresh bread and a tree cut from the farm, covered with ornaments bearing family names; grandchildren climbing the magnolia trees, eating ice box cookies from the yellow cookie jar, and playing countless games of "PIG."

Grammie often showed up to gatherings and ended up at the piano, playing old hymns and Christmas songs by ear. She was always up for a good time, whether attending Clemson football games well into her mid-80s or cheering on her grandchildren at ballgames. If you needed someone to believe in you, you could always count on Grammie. She deeply impacted the lives of her family through her presence and her fitly spoken wisdom that challenged and encouraged us all.

Lou is now reunited with Al and with her Savior, Jesus Christ. Although she will be deeply missed, her example will continue to challenge us, along with these final words she shared when asked for some wisdom:

"One thing in life, what would I say… I would be open-hearted and light-hearted. I would not take life so seriously. Enjoy every day you can. Do what you can to be happy and make others happy."

And a scripture found in her kitchen is a reminder that Grammie, a follower of Jesus Christ, is alive in Heaven today.

"We do not grieve as those who have no hope." 1 Thessalonians 4:13
