Simpson, USAF Ret'd, age 85, formerly of Clemson, SC, husband of the late Virginia Wray Simpson, died Tuesday, May 23, 2006 at Greenville Living Center in Greenville, SC.Born in Iva, SC on August 14, 1920, Mr. Simpson was a son of the late J. W. Simpson, Sr., and Dessie Simpson Simpson. Lt. Col. Simpson retired from the Air Force after 22 years of service. During service years, he was an instructor pilot for the B-47 Commander Program and he was also a base commander at Shilling Air Force Base in Kansas. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross Award and received a ribbon with three bronze service stars during the Pacific Theater era. He was the past commander of V.F.W. Post 4096 and a member of the retired Military Officers' Association. While attending Clemson College, he was honored to have been the manager of the Men's Basketball Team. He received his Bachelors Degree in 1941 from Clemson College and his Masters Degree from Clemson University in 1965. He was member of the Tiger Letterman's Association and a long time IPTAY member. Lt. Col. Simpson was also a retired educator having taught in Anderson County and many years at Crescent High School. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Clemson. He is survived by son, Jerry Simpson, Sr., and his wife, Phyllis of Cramerton, NC, daughter, Cheryl Whitfield and her husband, Larry of Spartanburg, SC, daughter, Pam Atkinson and her husband, Jerry of Sunset, SC and son, Scott A. Simpson Sr., and his wife, Trudy of Boiling Springs, SC; sister, Mildred Campbell of Iva, SC, Kathleen McCullough of Fort Mill, SC and Fredna Prince of Hopkins, SC; eight grandchildren, Jerry Simpson, Jr., Brian Simpson, Heather Mehaffey, Rev. Russell Whitfield, Rev. Keith Whitfield, Kimberly Atkinson, Scott A. Simpson, Jr., Shannon Joy Simpson. Eight great-grandchildren also survive.In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, May 26, 2006 at 2:30 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by the Reverend Keith Whitfield.
