Obituary

Lucille Clark Wayland Harkey, 98, wife of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther Harkey, Jr., died Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at Brookdale of Anderson, SC. Lu, as she was known to friends, was born in Tsing Kiang Pu, China on January 24, 1923. Her parents, the Rev. and Mrs. John Edwin Wayland, were among the last missionaries to leave China during civil unrest that led to the communist take-over. Her older sister, Cora, served as a missionary to South Korea. Her younger brother, 'Didi' was a Presbyterian minister serving in North Carolina. Lu returned to the United States as a young child and grew up in the hills of West Virginia. She was valedictorian at DuPont High School, Charleston, WV, and an honor graduate of Queens College, Charlotte, NC, with one year of graduate education at Assembly Training School (Presbyterian School of Education) in Richmond, VA. She taught high school for two years in Morehead City, NC, served as Director of Christian Education at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, NC, and was a substitute teacher in Anderson District Five. She and Marty were married on June 27, 1947 and were together for 70 years. In their first thirteen years Marty worked with General Electric, after which Marty entered Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA, to prepare to become an ordained Presbyterian minister. Together they served congregations in Decatur, GA, St. Petersburg, FL, and Anderson, SC., as well as several interims in South Carolina after retirement. While in Anderson at Central Presbyterian Church, Lu served as a church elder, Sunday School teacher, and President of the Women of the Church of Piedmont Presbytery (now Foothills Presbytery). Her special interests included Bible teaching, reading, gardening, boating, travel, and working with international students through P.E.O. She authored Prisms of Life (2009) in which she shares experiences of God's grace and presence in our lives. Lu loved her family, church, community, and joyfully led others to faith in Jesus Christ. Lu is survived by three children, the Rev. Dr. Martin L. Harkey, III (Luke), and wife Carolyn, Dr. Rosanne H. Pruitt, and husband John, and Wayland Harkey and wife Beth; six grandchildren, Rob Harkey and wife Amy, Dr. Anna Harkey, Crayton Pruitt and wife Sarah, the Rev. Martin Pruitt and wife Anna, Joshua Harkey and wife Alissa, and Alex Harkey and wife Angela; and five great grandchildren, Eric, Atlee, Fisher, Scarlett, and Jackson. A private service for the family will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 10, 2021 at Central Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Noelle Henry Read officiating. The service will be available on-line through The McDougald Funeral Home Facebook page or by contacting the church to request a DVD. The family would like to express appreciation to the staff at Brookdale and Brookdale Hospice for their care of Lu. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Mission Fund, Central Presbyterian Church, 1404 North Boulevard, Anderson, SC 29621.
