Luisa Ngo Ching, 70, died peacefully at home in Anderson, SC, on January 4, 2016 after her third battle with breast cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family: Chay Ching her husband of 42 years; her children Cindy Whitehead (Tim), Christopher Ching (Jinhee Lee), Cedric Ching, and Camille Ayres (Anthony); and her grandchildren Cooper and Tucker Whitehead and Evelyn Ching.
Born on February 14, 1945 in Manila, Philippines, she was the eldest of eight children to Keh Seng Sy (late) and Le Tin Tan. Tutoring her siblings sparked what would be an enduring, self-sacrificing devotion to family, community, and education. She graduated valedictorian from the Immaculate Conception Academy (Manila) and cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Santo Tomas (Manila) where she was student body president overseeing 16 colleges and made many lasting friendships. Later, she was a teacher and department head at St. Jude Catholic School (Manila).
She moved to Anderson in 1978 after arriving in the United States in 1973. While her focus was raising her children, she enjoyed volunteering at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, her children's schools, Meals on Wheels, Anderson Free Clinic and other local charities. Notably she created an After-School Enrichment Program at McCants Middle School for which she was recognized with the James Cash Penney Award, a national award for community service. When her children left for college, she worked at JCPenney's until her retirement.
Luisa was well known for sharing her Chinese cooking and also loved to bargain hunt for gifts. She enjoyed traveling with her family and friends where she could learn about foreign places and local culture. She celebrated familiar traditions and made new friends at the Philippine American Association of the Carolinas and the Greenville Chinese Cultural Association. Her laugh and smile were recognizable all around town and will be immensely missed.
In addition to her husband, children, and grandchildren, Luisa is survived by her siblings Danilo Ngo (Emily), Marcela Ngo Sy, Willy Ngo Sy (Dory), Simon Ngo Sy, John Ngo Sy (Pat), Catherine Ngo Sy, and nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her father and by her brother Wilson Ngo Sy.
