Marcus G. "Sonny" Sexton, Jr., age 75, husband of Brenda B. Sexton, passed away peacefully at home Sunday, January 1, 2017.
A native of Anderson, he was the son of the late Marcus and Ruth Sexton. He was the owner of Sexton Sign Company that provided signs to the Anderson community for over 40 years. He was a longtime member of Parkwood Baptist Church where he served as deacon and was very involved in the music ministry.
He was a man of many talents. One of which was music, which was a vital part of his life. He started singing and playing guitar in local bands at the age of 13 and remained a fixture in the Anderson music community into his 40's. He played and sang at his church and with his brothers and sisters (known as The Sexton Family). They sang Southern Gospel together in many local churches and nursing homes. Most recently he played with old friends known as the Grumpy Old Men. Another gift of his was woodworking. He created many signs, many of them hand lettered, and crafted pieces of furniture and art for his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Brenda B. Sexton; daughter Carla Robinson and husband John; son Mark Sexton and wife Traci; 6 grandchildren, William "Trey" Aiken, Justin G. Aiken, Taylor B. Aiken (who was raised in the home) and wife, Taylor, Jacob A. Sexton, Jordan D. Sexton and John M. Sexton; 2 brothers, Randall J. Sexton and wife Selma and Roger D. Sexton; 2 sisters, Gloria S. Stone and husband Pat, Suzanne Cartee and husband Eddie; 9 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Shirley S. Floyd.
A celebration of his life will be held at Parkwood Baptist Church on Friday, January 6, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. with Rev. Joe Whisnant and Rev. Jerry Gray officiating. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall after the service. A private family committal will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
