Obituary

Marga Bashir was born in a small village in Germany during the Third Reich of the Nazi Era. She migrated to the United States in 1956 and became a naturalized citizen in 1962. Marga retired from the Department of the Air Force in 1994 after serving for 26 years as a civilian chef. She was an active member of the Baha'i Faith for over 40 years. Mrs. Bashir was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and was honored with birthday and citizenship anniversary cards from President Barack and Michelle Obama. She was awarded a certificate of service during the cold War by the secretary of defense Donald Rumsfeld. Marga was awarded the highest Kentucky state honor of commission as an Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels by Governor Steven Beshear. She loved family, cooking, international travel and service to her community. Marga Bashir passed away on Saturday, August 11, 2018 in Baltimore, Maryland.; she is the beloved wife of Amir Bashir; devoted mother of Arnulf Handy and wife Sonja, Wallace Handy and wife Cynthia, Allen Handy and wife Kathy, Bryant Handy, Linda Handy and preceded in death by a son Julian Bond; dear sister of Kurt Gerlach and wife Ingrid, Annaliese Simon, Stefan Gerlach and preceded in death by a brother Hermann Gerlach Jr; also survived by ten grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. Family and friends will honor Marga's life at the Evans Funeral Chapel-8800 Harford Road- Parkville on Saturday, August 18 from 1-2 PM at which time a funeral service will begin. A private interment will be held at MJ Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson, South Carolina. In lieu of flowers please make donations to your favorite charity.
