Margaret Parker Fretwell, age 101, passed away on April 20, 2016, at NHC of Anderson.
Born in Florence, NJ on May 6, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Charles "Cecil" Parker and the late Mary Cecilia Irons Parker. Mrs. Fretwell attended Duke University where she was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. She also attended Butler University for a time to help establish a chapter of Kappa Delta. Mrs. Fretwell served as an Elder, Trustee and Sunday School teacher at the First Presbyterian Church of Anderson and was awarded the designation of Life Member of Presbyterian Women. She was a chapter member and former President of the Anderson Memorial Hospital Auxiliary where she served as a Pink Lady for 38 years. At various times she served on the boards of The Community Chest, which is now known as the United Way, Meals on Wheels, the Anderson Red Cross, and the Anderson County Historical Society. She was a charter member of the Anderson County Woman's Club and both the Anderson Junior and Anderson Senior Assembly. She was also active with Girl Scouts.
During World War II, she was recognized for her volunteer work with the USO.
Mrs. Fretwell devoted her time to Anderson City Schools and was presented a Certificate of Appreciation from School District #5 for her involvement at McCants Junior High School. At the age of 91 she volunteered as a mentor at Concord Elementary School. For this she was recognized with The United Way's Daily Point of Life award. In 2004 the United States House of Representatives honored her for her service and many contributions to her community.
She is survived by her son, Raymond B. Fretwell and his wife Ginny, of Anderson, SC; a daughter, Margaret F. McDougald and her husband Douglas, of Anderson, SC; a daughter-in-law, Jean R. Fretwell, of Columbia, SC; ten grandchildren, Samuel J. Fretwell, III and his wife Megan, of Columbia, SC, Margaret F. Shiflet and her husband Harvey, of Charleston, SC, Jeannie F. Moody and her husband Eric, of Columbia, SC, William Parker Fretwell Jr. and his wife Amy, of St. Augustine, FL, Alice F. Lanier and her husband David, of Greer, SC, Betsy N. Fretwell, and her partner Christine Robinson, of Las Vegas, NV, Mary B. Clark and her husband Robert, of Greenville, SC, Raymond B. Fretwell, Jr. and his wife Misty, of Anderson, SC, Douglas C. McDougald III and his wife Tricia, of Anderson, SC, and Jesse F. McDougald and his wife Greer, of Anderson, SC; 22 great-grandchildren; and a half-sister, Loretta Liljestrand, of Florida.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Joseph Fretwell; two sons, Samuel J. Fretwell, Jr. and William P. Fretwell; a half-brother, Charles C. Parker, Jr.; and a half-sister, Barbara Maxwell.
The Funeral Service to honor the life of Mrs. Fretwell will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Anderson on Monday, April 25, 2016, at 12:00 p.m. with The Reverend Dr. Dennis Tedder officiating. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Those serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons, Samuel Fretwell, III, Parker Fretwell, Jr., Raymond Fretwell, Jr., Douglas McDougald, III, and Jesse McDougald.
The family will receive friends, prior to the service on Monday, in the Chennault Parlor of First Presbyterian Church, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.
