Obituary

Mary Margaret Smith Gibbs, age 87, formerly of Anderson, SC, passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at The Oaks at Post Road in Cumming, GA.

Born May 17, 1937, in Seneca, SC, she was a daughter of the late Sam Smith and Laura Wilson Smith Tate. She was married for over 60 years to Richard "Jimmy" Gibbs, Jr. until his death in 2018. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Pat Smith.

Margaret, affectionately called "Nana", was the consummate homemaker and lover of all things beautiful. Not only was she impeccably dressed, she took great pride in decorating her home. She loved flowers, practicing yoga, and living on the lake. She was a wonderful cook and was famous for her mac and cheese, coconut cake, and biscuits. She loved the holidays and made sure everyone's presents were beautifully wrapped and tied with a big homemade bow. She was a member of Concord Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son, Jay Sterling Gibbs (Jeanette Ladd Gibbs); daughter, Janey Machielle McBride; half-sister, Jan Tate Bilton; grandchildren, Laurel Gibbs Coffing, Christian Philip Gibbs, Mariel Gibbs Harlow, Erin McBride Fredericks, and Michael Harrison McBride, II; and 7 great grandchildren.
