Marie Mertes Hertig, 83, wife of James L. Hertig, passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, October 2, 2016, at AnMed Health Medical Center. Marie was born in Superior, WI. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Elva Mertes.
Marie moved with her family from Richmond, VA to Anderson, SC in 1969. She touched many lives working as a teacher for Anderson County School District 5 for 26 years at Centerville School. With her infinite love for knitting, she created countless pieces for her family, grandchildren, and friends. She shared her creations of love with the American Cancer Association, Anderson Crisis Pregnancy Center, the Appalachian Ministry, and as far away as Haiti. After retirement, Marie and Jim continued their love of traveling with experiences throughout Europe, Australia, and the states.
In addition to her husband, James, Marie is survived by her children, Chris, Susan, Sarah, and Mary Ellen; her grandchildren, Scott, Jacob, Jonathan, Marie, Samantha, and Heather.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, October 4, at the McDougald Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Services will be held on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Clemson, SC. Father Daniel McLellan will officiate. A reception at Brimley Hall will follow the service. Burial will take place at a later date at M.J. Dolly Cooper Veteran's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Andrew Catholic Church Building Fund, 209 Sloan Street, Clemson, SC 29631.
