Marion D. Mandrell, age 93, of Anderson, SC, passed away Saturday, June 24, 2023, at Rainey Hospice House.
She was the wife of the late Dr. N. Eugene Mandrell. She graduated from Carson Newman University with a B.A. degree, Carver School of Social Work with a M.A. degree and Clemson University with a M. Ed Degree. She taught in the Psychology Department at Anderson University. The Psychology Laboratory (now The Mandrell Psychology Suite) was established in honor of Marion and Eugene. They also received The Annie Dove Denmark Award "to friends or alumni who have served Anderson College sacrificially and have advanced the progress and aims of Anderson College." They were on the advisory board of The Center Stage at The Rainey Fine Arts Center and faculty sponsors for the Student Circle K Club and many international students. She was a member of The Southeastern Psychological Association, The American Association of Counseling and Development, as well as the Southeastern Educational Board Committee for Faculty Development. She was a Life Member of Mental Health Association of America in Anderson County and on The Pilot Program for the Deinstitutionalization of State Hospitals.
She enjoyed working with Eugene as he pastored Walhalla First Baptist Church and was President of the Beaverdam Baptist Women's Missionary Union. She was Regional Vice President and on the Executive Board of the South Carolina WMU, the Board of Trustees of Camp Rawls and on the Site Development and Architectural Design Committee for Camp La Vida.
Boulevard Baptist Church was a significant and meaningful part of her life. She was a deacon, Sunday School teacher, a member of the Senior Choir, a Missions Facilitator, a member of the International Committee and participated in volunteer missions in Guatemala and Romania. Marion was on the Task Force for planning and building the Christian activities building.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Nelson Eugene Mandrell, Jr. of Chicago, IL (Teresa Hara); daughter, Jeanne Mandrell (Barbara Comer) of Charlotte, NC; a grandson, Dr. Nelson C. Mandrell of Charlottesville, VA; a sister, Martha Dowis Bowick of Anderson, SC, several special nieces, nephews and cousins, and Sudha Kale' of India and Fumi Jensson of Seattle, WA.
In addition to her husband of 59 years, she was preceded in death by her parents, Haynie Marion and Varnell Osteen Dowis of Ninety Six, SC.
The family would like to thank the Anderson medical community, Boulevard Baptist Church, and friends who gave her support and love.
The family will receive friends Saturday, July 1, 2023, from 5:00-7:00 pm at The McDougald Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held Sunday, July 2, 2023, at 2:00 pm at Boulevard Baptist Church with Dr. Austin Carty officiating. The service will be available via livestream beginning at 2:00 pm at the link below. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
