Marjorie Anne Harvey, age 77, passed away on November 29, 2020 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born on April 15, 1943 in Van Buren, Maine to Antoine and Irene St. Pierre. She met the love of her life and husband of 58 years, Thomas Denis Harvey, during the annual fall potato harvest while, as a young military man, he helped pick potatoes and raise money for the local hospital. The beautiful and fiery redhead had met her match in the cheeky and handsome young soldier.
Together, Tom and Marj, embarked on a life that would find them travelling all over the United States and Europe. Marj was a fiercely loyal and dedicated wife and mother. Full of energy and a strong work ethic, her early years of motherhood and marriage were filled with many volunteer positions that helped her family grow. From PTAs, Officers' Wives Clubs, church choirs, Welcome Committees, Concessions for Friday NIght Football and Girl Scout and Boy Scout troop leadership, she gave all she had to make a warm and happy home life for her family.
When the family was living in Brussels, Belgium, both children now in high school, Marj found herself able to pursue a career of her own. She was selected as the Director of the Visit USA Center, under the oversight of the US Ambassador, and developed programs and partnerships to promote American tourism to European visitors. She was already fluent in French (it was her first language) and became fluent in Dutch as well. Marj was a born leader andextremely gifted director and she grew her small office into a respected entity within the European and US tourism industry. She was recognized for her achievements by Paris Match, a high circulation European magazine, and was the first woman to receive the highest award at the Annual US Tourism Industry "Pow Wow" Meeting, the Award of the Indian Chief Headdress.
After over ten years living in Belgium, Marj and Tom returned to the US and began their own business, Top of the World Travel, based in North Miami Beach, Florida. They created unique travel programs for European companies interested in travel to the US for such things as annual sales incentives. Soon Marj was offered and accepted an executive position at Renaissance Hotels International overseeing the operation of their elite-level hotels throughout the Caribbean and Central America. When the company purchased the Stouffer Hotels in Cleveland, Ohio, Marj was offered the position of Director of Purchasing, overseeing all of the purchasing requirements of their hotelsworldwide. She was the first and only woman to hold a Director position at the company, and the only Director to report directly to the President.
Marj and Tom moved back to Maine to begin retirement, ending up in Bangor. But a few years later, they would move further south to their current home of South Carolina. They have called Anderson their home for the past 20 years. Marj has been an active parishioner at Saint Andrew's Catholic Church in Clemson, Saint Paul's in Seneca, and currently at Saint Joseph's in Anderson. She was a leader of the Welcome Committee, the BereavementCommittee, the "Hilltoppers" senior social group and Co-Chaired the ProLife Committee with Tom.
To her grandchildren she was known as Memere, and she could always be counted on for a triple chocolate cake when they visited. She loved to cook and bake, and would often deliver her famous chicken stew with dumplings to her ill and elderly neighbors. She was an avid reader and loved to craft, sew and decorate her home. She was always on the go, full of energy, and always working on the next project.
Marj is survived by her loving family: her husband, Thomas Denis Harvey; her daughter, Prisca Lynne Lynch, and her three grandchildren, Prisca, Ryan and Sean; and her son, William Anthony Harvey, and his wife, Nancy, and her granddaughter, Claire.
