Obituary

Marshall Eugene Dempsey, 87, of Anderson, SC, passed away, Sunday, January 3, 2021, at Rainey Hospice House. Born August 25, 1933, in Anderson County, SC, he was the son of the late W.T. and Elsie Fortner Dempsey. Marshall was a graduate of Boys High, attended Clemson University and was a veteran of the United States Army. He was the owner and operator of Dempsey's Used Cars and Dempsey's Shell Service Station. He was a mason and past Master of Ruff Lodge. Marshall was a faithful charter member of Forest Hill Baptist Church where he served as the Superintendent of Sunday School for 32 years, was a past Chairman of the Deacons and a Sunday School teacher. He will be remembered by his family as a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Barbara Black Dempsey; children, Teresa Simpson (Ken) and Michael E. Dempsey; brother, Clyde Dempsey (Martha); sisters, Helen Whiteside and Sue Brewer; grandchildren, Jeremy Simpson, Christopher Simpson, Morgan Dempsey (Rick Moore) and Miranda Dempsey; and great-grandchildren, Julian and Raylan Moore. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Dot Bumgardner; and brother, James Dempsey. Marshall will lie in state between the hours of 10:00 am and 1:00 pm on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at Forest Hill Baptist Church where family and friends may pay their respects and sign the guest register. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm with Rev. Tom Owen and Rev. Richard Lister officiating. Burial will take place at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Social distancing will be observed and masks are required. Flowers are optional and memorial contributions may be made to Forest Hill Baptist Church, 909 Plantation Rd., Anderson, SC 29621.
