LongMarch 27, 1914 - March 18, 2011ANDERSON, SCMartha Abernethy Long, age 96, of Anderson, SC and a former long-time resident of Due West, SC passed away on Friday, March 18, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House.Born in Gastonia, N.C., Martha was a daughter of the late Francis Cleveland Abernethy and Shelton Wilson Abernethy. She was a graduate of Erskine College, Class of 1934. After graduation, she taught elementary school in Gastonia, and then high school at Due West High. She continued her teaching career at Erskine College, where she taught mathematics from 1955 until her retirement in 1979. Upon her retirement, she was conferred the title of Professor Emerita of Mathematics. Even after her retirement, she continued to work regularly as a dedicated volunteer at Erskine. In1983, Martha received the Erskine College Distinguished Alumni Award and in 2009 the Erskine College Service Award. She was a long time member of the Due West Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir for many years. She was a member of Circle Number Four, and served as leader of the Joy Group for many years. She also formerly served as chairperson of the congregation. Martha is survived by her son, Edgar H. Long, Jr. and his wife, Amy Tripp Long of Anderson, SC, their children, Edgar Tripp Long of Surf Side Beach, SC and Amanda Henderson Long of Columbia, SC. She was predeceased by her husband, Edgar Henderson Long; a brother, Robert Abernethy, and her sister, Minerva A. Perry.The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff and caregivers at Covenant Way in Due West, at Anderson Place, and Hospice of the Upstate, all of whom provided love and care for Martha in her later years. The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, March 20, 2011 at 3:00PM at the Due West A.R.P. Church with Reverend Calvin Draffin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
