Born in Iva, SC, on April 8, 1932, she was a daughter of the late James 'Jim' Chambers and Lola Smith Chambers. Mrs. Smith retired from the textiles industry and was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Temple. Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn Branyon; a granddaughter that was reared in the home and that Mrs. Smith lived with the last four years, Dana Bailey and husband, Ken; grandson, Michael Fortner, Jr.; three great grandchildren: Jessica Bailey, Kensley Bailey, and Nathan Bailey; and one great great-granddaughter, Izabella Callaham.In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, James Melvin Smith; two sons: Larry Melvin Smith and James Richard Smith; one brother, James 'Smokey' Chambers; and three sisters: Diane Sullivan, Fannie Mae Holcombe, and Parnice Glenn.The Funeral Service will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, December 1, 2009, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home.
