Mary Jo Cosner passed away in her home on December 7, 2020, due to COVID-19. She was 84.
She was born on January 10, 1936 in Fyffe, AL, the seventh of eight children, to Albert Theo and Lora Grace Cook, who were sharecroppers. In 1954 she graduated from high school in Malone, NY near the top of her class. She married Oliver Cosner, a geologist and veteran of WWII, in 1964. The Cosners lived in the Virgin Islands, Virginia, Upstate New York, and finally South Carolina, where she was an administrative assistant at Clemson University. She was widowed in 1987 when Oliver passed away. After her retirement, she was an ardent square dancer for many years, a hobby she shared with her loving partner of more than two decades, Robert Dowling, who preceded her in death on December 4, 2020.
Mary Jo was kind, encouraging, a good listener, generous, considerate, and a supportive mother/aunt/grandmother who paid attention to small details and expressed gratitude regularly-a thoughtful and loving person overall. She was a member of the Townville Presbyterian Church and volunteered at the Free Clinic in Anderson, SC, for many years.
She is survived by her son, Christopher Cosner and daughter-in-law, Shelly Kosak; her granddaughter, Clare, her sister, Jane Anderson, her brother, Max Cook, Oliver's children, Joe Cosner, Alice Moye, and Lorne Cosner, and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
According to her wishes and current circumstances there will not be a memorial.
