Obituary

Mrs. Mary Evelyn Shiflet Howell, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and great-grandmother passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital in Athens, Georgia. She was 85.

Mary was born on July 28, 1941, in Anderson, South Carolina, to the late Raymond and Ruby Stancil Shiflet. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband, William Charles Howell, and daughter Shelia Garrett (Waco).

Mary is survived by her son, Ray Howell (Tina); sisters: Linda Murphy (Ned), Freddie Powell (Wayne), and Judy Freeman (Tommy); grandchildren: Jessica Clark (Anthony), Amanda Rousey (Robbie), Justin Garrett, Ryan Howell (Chelsea), Samantha Aderhold (Cory), and Taylor Nash (Garrett); and 14 great-grandchildren.

For the majority of her career, Mary worked as a caregiver. Caring for others and helping people brought her a deep sense of purpose and fulfillment. She took great pride in the difference she made in those she cared for.

Mary loved reading her Bible and found comfort in her faith. Her happiest moments were spent surrounded by the people she loved, especially during family gatherings and holidays, with Christmas holding a special place in her heart.

Mary loved working on puzzles alongside her sisters, often sharing puzzles and enjoying the time they spent together. She also loved cooking, trying new recipes, gardening, fishing, and camping.

Mary will be remembered for her caring heart, unwavering faith, love of family, and the kindness she showed to others throughout her life. She will be deeply missed but the family finds comfort in knowing she is now at peace and reunite with her beloved husband and daughter.

Funeral services celebrating Mary’s life will be conducted on Wednesday, October 7, at 1:30p.m. in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with Mr. Ben Thompson officiating. Interment, alongside her husband and daughter, will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Park. The family will greet friends immediately following the service.

Flowers are accepted, and contributions may be made in her memory to the charity of one’s choice.

Until we meet again, Mary will remain forever in our hearts.
