Centenarian, Mary Louise Gunter Jones, 100, of Iva, SC, passed away Saturday, May 15, 2021, at Iva Health and Rehab. Born September 14, 1920 in Abbeville County, SC, she was a daughter of the late Ellis Gunter and Jessie Moore Gunter. She was the widow of James Albert Jones. Louise was not a stranger to hard work. In 1935 the federal government established the National Youth Administration to provide work training for the unemployed. World War II had just started when she became one of Anderson Hospital's first nursing assistants. Now known as AnMed Health Medical Center, she was excited to begin helping patients. She was charged with disinfecting patient's rooms, hand cranking beds, and emptying wash pans. Even though it was hard work, she loved helping others. Louise worked on the same wing as Jennie Gilmer, who founded the hospital and the two became fast friends. As manufacturing plants opened up, she left the hospital and began a long career in textiles. Louise had one hobby, work. Painting walls, mending shutters, whatever needed done, she was there. She also tirelessly worked in her many gardens. She spoke of lying in bed, anxiously waiting for the sun to rise, so she could don her coveralls, grab her pocket knife, and get outside with her plants. Even though, her husband jokingly used to tell her she was going to plant more than she could take care of, she continued until health issues stopped her. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by brothers, S. T. Gunter, Grady Gunter, E. J. Gunter and Floyd Gunter; and sisters, Doris Jordan and Beatrice Robinson. She was the last surviving member of her family. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at 3:00 pm at the chapel of the McDougald Funeral Home. Rev. Billy Whitfield will officiate. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will greet and speak with friends prior to the service from 2:30 pm - 3:00 pm . Louise requested in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children-Greenville, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.
