Mary Alice Jackson Rice ANDERSON, SC Mary Alice Jackson Rice, age 80, wife of Earle McGee Rice, passed away on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at her residence. Born in Winona, Minnesota, on June 20, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Charles Atkinson Jackson, Jr. and the late Mary Gervais Watson Jackson. Mrs. Rice was a graduate of Wesleyan College and received her Masters in Education from Clemson University. She taught at McCants Junior High School until 1968. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church where she served for many years on the Altar Guild. In 1970 she gave her beef vegetable soup recipe with her secret ingredient to the women of Grace Church for their First Annual Soup Luncheon. Her recipe has been made hundreds of times since then for the Soup Luncheon, which raises funds for local community groups. She is survived by her husband; sons, Zach Watson Rice of Pendleton, South Carolina, and New York, New York, and Charles Jackson Rice (Carey) of Clemson, South Carolina; daughter, Elizabeth Rice English of Marietta, Georgia; brother, James W. Jackson of Anderson; grandchildren, Maggie Gervais Rice, Jackson Cary Rice, Palmer Jackalyn Rice, and Jackson McGee English. The family will receive friends in the parlor of Grace Episcopal Church from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 29, 2014. The Funeral Service will follow at 11 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church and will be conducted by the Reverend John B. Hardaway, IV. Family graveside services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Hagood, South Carolina.
