Mary Elizabeth Carter Sitton, our precious mother, is dancing, laughing, singing and celebrating in Heaven with our father, our Heavenly Father, and loved ones as of Sunday, May 3rd, 2020. What a life she lived here on earth! God had such an exquisite and wonderful plan and purpose for her here. He gave her the ultimate task…to be a positive encourager that made a difference to everyone she met. She was a tower of patience and strength, a fountain of joy, warmth and acceptance and a tree of faith and love. All of her 99 and a half years…she fulfilled that purpose!
Mary was born to Dr. Joseph Hollingsworth Carter and his beloved wife, Elizabeth Bright Carter in Mt. Airy, NC. She started making a difference very early on. Mary was gravely ill with scarlet fever as an infant. Her father, Dr Carter, had completed Davidson and UNC Law School and had planned to become a judge just like his father. His professional direction changed when his prayers for Mary's healing were answered! He, then answered a Higher Calling to become a minister…a Doctor of Divinity. He changed a whole host of lives… because Mary changed his!
Mary had a happy childhood, along with 2 sisters, Jeanne (Landrum), Bright (Covington) and a brother, Joe Carter. She graduated from Winthrop with a degree in Education/English and taught 3rd grade a few years before she married her 4th grade sweetheart, Augustus John Sitton. Gus had graduated from the Citadel and when they married, World War II was raging.
Mary had tremendous courage to begin married life at various Army bases, encouraging her husband, an officer and leader. She stood by as Gus was sent into grave danger in the European Theater of Operations, where he was a decorated tank platoon leader. Mary gave birth to their first son, John, without knowing if her husband was alive. Gus only became aware of John's birth by reading a military publication. Mary's faith in God got her through these dreadfully, fearful times. Later in life, BOTH of her beloved sons were overseas in military service danger at the same time…. John in Vietnam and Gene in Korea. Mary's faith and assurance during tough times has always been a beacon to others.
Mary had a FUN sense of humor and creativity ALWAYS. That drew people to her…especially her adoring husband and her three children, John Sitton, Gene Sitton (both of Pendleton) and Beth Sitton McGill (of Belmont, NC and husband, John McGill, whom she loved). She was a devoted and FUN mother… always the den mother at Scouts… the classroom mother at school and PTA.. the Sunday School/Bible School teacher and choir member at church… the "Cool" mom… the devoted and loving wife to her husband, Gus… the loving, encouraging friend to her girlfriends and fellow bridge players….. such a positive spirit… ALWAYS! Mary ADORED her grandchildren, Amy Sitton Segars (husband Scott of Lake Wylie, SC), Joe Sitton (wife Ashley of Columbia,SC), Marie Sitton (of Clemson, SC) and Bo Elledge (of Jackson Hole, Wyoming), and was involved in each of their lives as well as her six great-grandchildren, Turner, Ella, Sam, Gus, Emily and Wade. Haley Sitton Dillard of Greenville, SC was very special to Mary.
Mary spread positivity and smiles far and wide. She was a Pink Lady at Anderson Hospital for many years and a devoted Meals on Wheels Deliverer. She loved being active and healthy, especially, yoga, dancing, ping pong and walking her dog. She appreciated nature and cherished her annual mountain trip to see the autumn leaf color. Her flower gardens and raised bed vegetable gardens were a joy and a healthy hobby as well as boating and golfing with her family. Mary loved travel and had many trips to Europe, New York and out West with children, grandchildren, sisters and friends.
Her faith was constant and unshakable. Mary had the rare gift of combining deep spirituality with a life full of JOY! She was a member of Pendleton Presbyterian Church for years and then, in Anderson, Central Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder. Her father, Dr Joe Carter, had served that church previously as Pastor for approximately 17 years. The Attitude of Gratitude was Mary's motto and she had a calm assurance that allowed her to comfort and encourage others…again, fulfilling her life purpose.
These last years have been a bit fragile in terms of memory and mobility, but Mary has still been encouraging, laughing, displaying positivity and love to all and to her precious angel caregivers whom we LOVE. Especially, Susan McLees…Mary's devoted and loving companion/caregiver for 13 years. Mary and Susan have equally encouraged and taught each other in love, faith, patience and laughter. What a BLESSING in Mary's life!! Susan, Danny and Alex McLees, Norma Jean Robinson, Kayla Deutsch, Landon and Zibbie Henderson, Keoshi Rice, Angie Richards, Ann McAlister, and Shirley McDowell. This team of angels, led by Susan, had brought Mary love, joy and amazing care. Our family is forever grateful!
Mary fulfilled her earthly God-given purpose with grace, authenticity, elegance, smiles, hugs and pats! She will be with us ALWAYS! Well done good and faithful servant!
No services will be held at this time due to Covid-19 distancing rules but instead a Celebration of Life to be held on Mary's 100th birthday in September with details forthcoming.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Central Presbyterian Church of Anderson, SC.
