Maudianna Wigington Pruitt, age 81, passed away on Friday, November 9, 2018, at the Rainey Hospice House. Anna was a lifelong champion of education and the arts, dedicating her professional life as coordinator of programs for the gifted and talented in Anderson School District Five for more than 30 years before her retirement in 2008. She was a co-founder of the Piedmont Consortium for Gifted Education (now the South Carolina Consortium for Gifted Education), for which she served as President and member of the Board of Directors, as well as an adjunct professor in the graduate school of education at Converse College in Spartanburg. One of her most memorable life milestones was teaching at the United States Government School in the Panama Canal Zone from 1960-1962. Anna attended Girls High School in Anderson and earned her bachelor's degree from Emory University in Atlanta and her master's degree from Clemson University. She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church. Born in Anderson, SC on July 24, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Austin Wigington and the late Anna Southard Wigington. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, James Burriss Pruitt, Jr., and her brother-in-law, Forrest Smith Pruitt, Sr. She will be eternally loved by her three children, James Burriss Pruitt, III, Thomas Jonathan Pruitt (Heidi), and Anna Jane Pruitt; three grandchildren, Ellison, Peyton, and McCray Pruitt; brother-in-law, Patrick Major Pruitt; sister-in-law, Martha Morrow Pruitt; niece, Wendy Pruitt Williams (Marc) and nephew, Forrest Smith Pruitt, Jr. (Melissa). The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 14 at the home, 105 Nottingham Court, Anderson, SC 29621. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to fund a scholarship for the South Carolina Consortium for Gifted Education, PO Box 255, Irmo, SC 29063.
