IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mercedes M
Mcabee
September 1, 1948 – August 9, 2025
Mercedes McHargue McAbee, 76, of Anderson, SC, passed away on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at her home surrounded by family and friends.
Born September 1, 1948, in Oconee County, SC, she was a daughter of the late Homer V. McHargue and the late Hazel L. Cook McHargue. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Grady McAbee; son, Robert Stephen McAbee; brother, Carliss B. McHargue; and sisters, Carolyn F. Wood, and Mary Lee Barnes.
She worked as a service director with the Salvation Army for several years. She enjoyed working in the banking industry for a time and finished her working career, at Brookside Nursing Home. Mrs. McAbee was a wonderful person, definitely a "people" person. Lovely inside and out, she was always helpful to anyone, anytime, and never wanted nor expected anything in return. She had a true servant's heart.
Her passion was sewing. She could make the most beautiful things, from bonnets and aprons to wedding gowns. She shared her sewing talent during COVID, by making over 1,000 masks and distributing them around the Anderson community. Mrs. McAbee was a member of Pope Drive Baptist Church and participated in all senior activities. Her talent as a seamstress and being a true friend to many, will be missed.
She is survived by her brother, Wayne V. McHargue, and his wife, Susan; and many nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends and family Friday, August 15, 2025, from 10 am – 11 am at The McDougald Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 11 am in the chapel with Major Wayne V. McHargue officiating. Burial will be at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens following the funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Salvation Army, PO Box 43, Anderson, SC 29622
