Michael McClain, aged 78, died Monday, September 12, 2022 at his home in Anderson South Carolina. Born July 12, 1944 in Washington, DC, he was the son of James Guy McClain and Vivian Pearl Davisson.
Michael grew up in West Virginia where in high school he excelled in both football and basketball. He attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. After two years he joined the Army as an enlisted man and served one tour in Vietnam, then attended Officer Candidate School (OCS) and was commissioned as a Second Lt. and served in the 1st Cavalry Division, two more tours in Vietnam followed. He left the Army in 1969 as a Captain. During his service to his country he received two purple hearts and four bronze stars. After leaving the Army Michael returned to Dartmouth College where he majored in Economics. Upon graduation, he moved to Australia. In 1996 he returned to the United States and coached Rugby in New Jersey, eventually moving to Burnsville, North Carolina where he opened a luthier shop. In 2005 he met his wife Renee whom he married in 2009.
Michael loved horses and all animals - his first memory was being on a horse with his mom. He loved music, especially Celtic music, and was a long time luthier. Michael served his country, worked as an economist, loved coaching and playing rugby and was also a farrier.
Michael is survived by his wife, Renee Mendola of Anderson, South Carolina, two children, Megan and Glenn McClain of Brisbane, Australia and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
Interment at M.J. Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
