September 14, 1928 - August 26, 2006STARR, SCMr. Millard Gambrell Smith, Jr., age 77, husband of Doris Hamby Smith of 220 Smith Road, Starr, SC, died Saturday, August 26, 2006 at the AnMed Health Medical Center in Anderson.Born in Montgomery, Alabama, on September 14, 1928, Mr. Smith was the son of the late Millard G. Smith, Sr., and Cornelia Matthews Smith. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama with post study at Clemson University. He served in the United States Air Force with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He was employed as the Executive Director with Anderson County Board of Education from January 3, 1983 to present. He also had been a teacher with Anderson School District Three. Mr. Smith has served and received several awards throughout his distinguished career in association with the Anderson County Board of Education, Anderson County Educators Federal Credit Union, SC Educators Parent Teachers Association, SC Vocational Association, Greater Anderson Rotary Club, Paul Harris Fellow and Anderson County Prayer Task Force Board. Most recently, he received from Governor Sanford, the Order of the Silver Crescent. He was a long time member of the Starr United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of thirty-seven years, Doris Smith; daughter, Michelle Smith Herring; son-in-law, Michael J. Herring; granddaughters, Cornelia Brandi Ethridge, Caroline April Herring, Caitlin Rose Herring, Michaela Grace Herring; grandson-in-law, Joe Ethridge; great-grandson, Hayden Russell Ethridge.The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at 2:00 pm at Starr United Methodist Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. Ralph Bowling and the Reverend Jack Ray. A graveside service will be limited to the immediate family at the Bethesda Family Cemetery officiated by the Reverend Ed Marsh.The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Monday, August 28, 2006 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.The family will be at the residence.Flowers are optional.
