Missy Nail, 63 years old, passed away peacefully at her home in Pendleton, SC, surrounded by loved ones, on August 17, 2022 after a (recent) diagnosis of ALS. She was born on July 13, 1959 in Anderson, SC. She was the daughter of Eleanor Gale Morris and David Herndon Owen.
Missy was known as a survivor and a leader. She had a quick wit, strong work ethic and a passion for helping others. She loved the upstate and enjoyed volunteering in Pendleton and in Clemson. In 2005, Missy was co-chair of the fundraising committee for Barrett's Place Playground at Veterans Park in Pendleton and worked continuously throughout the year to help raise enough money to build the playground and maintain it. She also was in charge of feeding the hundreds of volunteers who showed up daily to help build the playground as well as serving as one of the Team Captains who actually did a lot of the manual labor required. After the dedication of Barrett's Place Playground, Missy helped to establish "Friends of the Park", a non-profit organization dedicated to keeping Veterans Park the best it can be. She was the organization's first Chairperson and served in that role for several years. Another one of her passions was "SOUP" (Supper on Us, Pendleton!) which she helped to organize. "SOUP" offered hot meals to Pendleton folks in need. Missy was also active with the former Pendleton Merchant's Guild as well as other civic organizations.
Missy attended T.L. Hanna High School and attended Anderson College. She was a member of Pendleton United Methodist Church. She worked for many years with the Clemson University Post Office and later worked in management at BILO and most recently with the Clemson University Custodial Services.
Missy is predeceased by her parents, her uncle, Edmund "Ted" Owen, and her beloved dog, Walker.
She is survived by her son, Zachary Free Thompson (Lisa) of Due West, SC; siblings: David, Morris, Blair and Jordan Owen of Anderson, SC; aunt, Pamela Owen-Early (Gary Early) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, cousins, Leigh Owen Wilkes and her son, Owen Covington Wilkes of Charleston, SC, Jennifer Covington DeLoche, and her son, James Hunter DeLoche of San Francisco. Also, a very special long-time friend, Barbara Little.
Special thanks to Kindred Hospice, Helen Abrams, Eric Naeseth, and Dr. Emily Hutchinson, as well as many other friends who helped to provide care for Missy during her illness.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at 1:00 pm at Pendleton United Methodist Church with Rev. Ricky Howell officiating. Friends and family may pay their respects and sign the Guest Register prior to the service from 12:00-1:00 pm. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
