Mrs. Dorothy B. Hawkins, lifelong resident of Anderson died peacefully Monday afternoon, February 26, 2018 at National Healthcare Anderson.
Born August 12, 1922 to Dr. D. J. Barton and Harriett R. Barton, Dorothy began a life that was filled with extraordinary achievements and remarkable associations. After graduating from Hanna High School and Anderson College, she married the late Thomas W. Vandiver and during the years of WWII their family expanded to include three children. By the 1950's Dorothy had become a small business owner and had been re-married to Joseph C. Hawkins who would remain her devoted partner for nearly sixty years. Her later experience as a Chapter Worker for the American Red Cross, Program Coordinator for A.R.A. Food Services and Executive Secretary at Singer Manufacturing Company inspired her to further her education.
She went on to earn her bachelor's and master's degrees (Summa Cum Laude) in Psychology from Furman University and attended the University of Georgia doctoral program. Her love of children and academics led her to pursue a career in public education and she was an outstanding teacher of both special needs and mainstream students. Her work was highly acclaimed, and she was honored as Teacher of The Year in Anderson School District Five. Despite an incredibly busy career as an educator she always sought to give back to her profession, her faith and her community.
She served as President of the Business and Professional Women's Association of Anderson County, Deacon and Sunday School teacher at First Presbyterian Church of Anderson and served on the Board of Directors of Presbyterian Homes. She also served as caregiver to her mother during her declining years. Dorothy was a skilled Master Bridge player, an accomplished artist in oils and watercolors, a remarkable chef and an amazing gardener. She and Joe travelled in each of the fifty states and throughout the world, bringing home extensive documentation of each new adventure. Even this whirlwind of activity never caused her to lose sight of what was truly important to her - her family. Her home was always the gathering spot for family members during every holiday season and the feasts enjoyed there were legend.
Dorothy was pre-deceased by her parents, her husband Joe, her son David W. Vandiver of Anderson, her half-brother Max and half-sisters, Margaret Bryant; her brothers David Judson Barton (Carolyn) and Hasell W. Barton (Myra), Caroline (Ken) Caughman and Harriett (Bill Sr.) Littlejohn.
She is survived by her brother Donald F. (Betty) Barton of Columbia, her son Richard A. (Linda) Vandiver of Ridgeway, daughter Gloria A. Vandiver (Larry W. Pigg), grandsons Richard A. Vandiver, Jr. of Charlotte, NC, Maxmilian Vandiver of Hendersonville, N.C., Judson Vandiver of Dallas, Tx. and her extended family of nieces and nephews who were extraordinarily important to her.
The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to Harry G. Morse, M.D. whose superb medical care enabled Dorothy to live a rich and active life, Karen Ramsey and Susan Willis whose faithful assistance and support gave her greater independence than would have been possible otherwise and the remarkable and loving staff of Station Six at NHC Anderson.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 am- 12:00 pm Friday, March 2, 2018 at The McDougald Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow in the chapel at 12:30 pm with Dr. Dennis Tedder officiating. Interment will follow at New Silver Brook Cemetery.
