On November 6, 2019, at 0200 hours, America lost another member of the greatest generation! Nathan Horace Carithers, 94, passed from his earthly home to his forever heavenly home. He was a resident of the Richard Campbell Veterans Nursing Home, previously a long-time resident of The Legacy of Anderson.
He was born in Greenwood, SC on New Year's Eve. His birthday was always celebrated with fireworks and fire crackers. He was the youngest son of the late Hugh Carithers and Lula Saxon Carithers. Nathan was married to the late Ruth Vickery Carithers for 69 years.
Nathan is survived by two daughters, Cherry Graham (Jim) and Candy Brock (Larry); a son, Henry Carithers (Henrietta); two granddaughters, Tammy Grizzle (Robert) and Lisa Beebe (Eric); and three great-grandchildren, Kristine Grizzle, Seth Beebe, and Grace Beebe. He is also survived by special friends, Jon and Dee Mooar, Ed and Audrey Pelkey, Glenda Poore, his Legacy family, and too many girlfriends to count!
In addition to his wife and parents, Nathan was predeceased by two brothers, J.D. Carithers and Marvin Carithers; and three sisters, Ruby Carithers, Corine Fortner and Mary Vickery. Nathan was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Nathan was a proud veteran of WWII. After "fibbing" about his age, he joined the US Navy at 16 years of age and served aboard the USS New Jersey. He was the recipient of 11 bronze stars for his service in the South Pacific. Nathan worked for over 46 years with JP Stevens, and later for Anderson Armored Car Service. He was known as the southern gentleman who wore bright red suspenders and his WWII cap with multiple cap pins on it.
Nathan was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Temple, Hejaz Shriners-Hillbilly Clan, a pilot for the Civil Air Patrol and the Vets Helping Vets of Anderson-his favorite Wednesday activity and extra doughnuts "sneaked" to him by Doris Burdette at each meeting.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at 1:00pm at the Committal Shelter at M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery with full military honors by Campbell Patriots Post 184. Visitation will follow the service.
The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorial contributions be made to Vets Helping Vets of Anderson, P.O. Box 265, Anderson, SC 29622 or Quilts of Valor, c/o Tommy Forrest, 907 Northlake Dr., Anderson, SC 29625.
The family will be at their respective homes.
