Obituary

Agnes Pamela "Pam" Coate Elkins, 79, of Anderson, SC, passed away, Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at her home. Born July 3,1940 in Ocala, FL, she was the daughter of the late John Charles Coate and Mary Agnes Lord Coate. Her family relocated to Alliance, OH in 1942 and then moved to Orlando, FL 1950. She graduated from William R. Boone High School in 1958 and attended nursing school. In November 1959 she married Jackie N. Elkins and moved to Chicago, IL. She worked as a mathematician for Nielsen Rating until moving to Connecticut in 1961. She continued working as a mathematician until 1964. She and her husband moved to Anderson, SC in 2001. Pam had 3 main areas of interest in her life in addition to her family: music, sewing, and gardening. She enjoyed these throughout her life. She excelled in all three and they gave her great joy. As a 7-year-old she began piano lessons. Pam displayed a natural talent which grew into a love for music, especially sacred music. For almost her entire life, she was involved in music in some form; accompanying choruses in Jr. and Senior High School, playing for Sunday School classes, providing music for special events, leading choirs and participating in worship teams notably at Northside and Covenant Churches, and most recently as the pianist at Andersonville Baptist Church. Preparation of her musical offerings gave her great joy. Pam learned to sew as a child and excelled at her hobby. There was nothing she would not tackle from mending to making curtains to dresses and even a wedding dress. She learned to quilt and took great pleasure in the planning of her projects, most of all the selection of fabrics. From the time she moved to Connecticut, Pam had a garden. Vegetables were the main focus and fruits came from the orchard. She learned to preserve the abundance of the fruits and vegetables and her family enjoyed them throughout the year. Flowers added beauty to her garden and the rose garden was amazing. She was gifted in making beautiful arrangements from these for the enjoyment of others. Once Pam moved to South Carolina she realized that much of what she knew of growing vegetables and flowers in Connecticut would not work in her new surroundings. She studied and her studies culminated in her becoming a Master Gardener. Pam was greatly loved by all who knew her and she loved her Lord. She will be missed by all. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Jackie Nelson Elkins; son, John Nelson Elkins (Cassie) of Anderson, SC; daughter, Elizabeth Elkins Peltier (John Andrew) of Seneca, SC; sister, Janice Van Dyke (Bing) of Idaho; grandchildren, Phoebie Elkins, Joyann Elkins, Connor Peltier and Myndee Harr; great-grandchildren, Zoey Belle Harr and McKayla Miller. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm Saturday, February 1, 2020 at The McDougald Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Sunday, February 2nd at 2:30 pm at Andersonville Baptist Church with Rev. Bruce Evans officiating. Burial will follow in Andersonville Baptist Church Cemetery.
