Paul Sidney Holmes, 89, of Anderson, SC, passed away, Tuesday, January 5, 2021, at AnMed Health Medical Center. Born July 24, 1931, in Hartwell, GA, he was the son of the late Robert Lee Holmes and Katie Carnes Holmes. Paul was devoted to his country and retired from the United States Army in 1969 after 21 years of service. During his military career, he served in both the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. Following his retirement from the Army, he began a second career at BASF retiring in 1982. In his spare time, Paul was an avid golfer, enjoyed woodworking and he was a member of Varennes Heights Baptist Church. He is survived by his son, Marty Holmes of Lavonia, GA; daughter, Paula Gibby of Martin, GA; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Ann Holmes; daughter, Joy Ann Holmes; and several brothers and sisters. Family and friends may pay their respects and sign the Guest Register on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at The McDougald Funeral Home. The funeral service with military honors will be held Thursday, January 21, 2021 at 3:00 pm at M.J. Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery Committal Shelter with Rev. Pat Ashworth officiating.
