Obituary

"Peggy" Pruitt Gillespie Peggy Gillespie passed away August 29, after several years of declining health. She was predeceased by her husband of fifty seven years, Curtis Doyle Gillespie and her parents John C. and Emma Smith Pruitt. Peggy was a graduate of Anderson Girls' High and Limestone College. Later she studied with the Chicago Institute of Interior Design and earned a certificate as a Home Decorator and Interior Designer. Still later, she earned a certificate as a Tennis Teaching Professional through the Van Der Meer School in Hilton Head. She was very successful at both careers but truly loved tennis and won many prestigious tournament titles throughout the Southeast over 40 years. She developed many close friendships while concentrating in ladies and mixed doubles in several age brackets. She was founder and past director of the Anderson County Open Tennis Tournament. A caring and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and active church member of Anderson First Baptist Church as well as a dear friend to many. She was a Board Member and volunteer at the Anderson County Arts' Council, helped with fundraising for the YMCA and was very active for many years with the Anderson Junior Assembly. Other volunteer activities included the Camellia Ball; Anderson County Museum, Anderson Historical Society and Anderson Heritage. She was a partner in the downtown gift shop, Brookgreen Court. Peggy had two daughters: Cindy, Mrs. Jack Buice and Anna, Mrs. Mike Smith. Peggy and Curtis took in her brother, John Pruitt (wife Rosanne), the year they married after the death of her mother. They raised him as their son. She leaves behind six grandchildren and two great grandchildren; Carlisle Buice Baker wife of Bee Baker and mother of Meriwether and Brock Baker; Julia Buice Evatt, wife of Kyle Evatt, Parker and David Smith, Crayton Pruitt (wife Melissa) and Martin Pruitt. The Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Peggy will be held on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Anderson with Rev. Josh Hunt officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Rhodes Respite Care (Altzheimers), First Presbyterian Church 302 W. Whitner St. Anderson 29625 or the Anderson Arts Center 110 Federal St. Anderson 29625. Family will be at the home of John and Rosanne Pruitt 117 Carter Hall Drive 4:00-6:00 Sunday, August 31.
