Rebekah Jean Bowden Wardlaw, age 94, of Clemson, SC, passed away Saturday, January 28, 2023, at her residence.
Born July 20, 1928, in Birmingham, AL, she was the daughter of the late Earl Judson Bowden and Henrietta Reser Bowden.
Rebekah was the ultimate performer, participating in numerous musicals at Anderson Community Theater and other surrounding venues. In addition to performing, she served as a master seamstress, making costumes for herself and other performers. She served as a stroke judge for many of the local swimming events, and later participated in fundraising for the community swim centers. She selflessly volunteered her time for the Police Department in Beaufort and Clemson with their outreach programs.
She was very supportive of all her children's endeavors, driving them to all their sporting events all over the country. She assisted in the booster club of all her children's sports as well. She enjoyed playing bridge, tennis, and riding motorcycles, most recently with her son. While living in Anderson, she was active at St. John's United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir. Upon moving to Beaufort, SC, she and her husband attended Carteret Street United Methodist Church where she also sang in the choir. With the church, she went on three mission trips to Costa Rica where she designed and made a wedding dress for the village to use for ceremonies. Currently, she was a member of Clemson United Methodist Church. She was instrumental in the production of The Last Supper at both St. John's and Clemson United Methodist Churches.
She is survived by her children, Susan W. Mauro (Bob) of Clemson, SC, David E. Wardlaw (Dianne) of Alpharetta, GA, and Marian W. Harris (Jim) of Townville, SC; brother, John J. Bowden (Donna) of Stapleton, GA; ten grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her devoted late husband, Dr. Samuel Earle Wardlaw who she cared for to the very end. He was proudly known for saying "He loved her his whole life". They treasured the 45 years spent together married making countless memories with their family that will be forever remembered.
She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy W. Hyde; sister, Marian B. Bramlette; and grandson, S. Charles Wardlaw.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 4, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Clemson United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
