Redus Robert Martin, of Anderson, SC, one of a dwindling cadre of veterans of World War II, died November 12, 2016, at Rainey Hospice House three weeks after his 95th birthday. His wife Betty (nee Horton) and her daughters, Eleanor Scruggs Trammell (Jerry) and Carolyn Scruggs survive, as do his brother, Charlie and wife June, of Belton, SC. Redus is also survived by two grandchildren, Elyse O'Neal (Jamie) and Lauren Trammell, four nephews and a niece. His sister died in 1989.
Born and reared in Belton, SC, he was the first child of Redus and Bessie Wilson Martin, and attended Belton schools. In 1943, he graduated from Clemson College with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and was immediately commissioned in the U.S. Army Air Forces. He served in England and France with the 96th Squadron of the 440th Troop Carrier Group, the service that ferried paratroopers to their drop zones.
After the war, he never again used his engineer's slide rule. He opted instead to join his Uncle Bill Wilson in the business that became Wilson's 5 to $1.00 Stores, Inc., with operations in the upstate. The business expanded to include his brother Charlie, his brother-in-law Larry Hammett, and the Stoddard family of Greenville who continue to operate the business. Redus served as President and Founding Partner for most of his active years.
Redus and Betty met in high school because they both loved to jitterbug. They reconnected some years later and began life together in 1962. They enjoyed relaxing, playing golf, hiking, and their "Oh be joyfuls" on summer afternoons at the family cabin in Cedar Mountain, NC. He was a "convertible" man, owning numerous convertibles until he gave up driving in his later years. He loved a good joke and always had one ready for the next encounter. Redus always commented,
"I've had a good life!"
The funeral service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church on Tuesday, November 15, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend John B. Hardaway, IV officiating. After the funeral service, the family will receive friends in the Parlor. Interment will follow at Belton Cemetery.
