Reuben Holman Speer, 98, of Anderson, SC, entered eternal life February 13, 2024.
He was born to Holman and Lillian Speer on June 15, 1925, in Hartwell, GA. After high school he joined the US Navy, serving aboard the USS Murphy as Captain's Aide. He was always haunted by memories of Normandy, North Africa, and Hiroshima. He spoke of the Yalta Peace Accord that occurred on the Murphy. After the war, Reuben owned and operated a car business until retirement. He was an active member of New Prospect Baptist Church for many years, member of Ruff Masonic Lodge, and a Shriner. Reuben was a family man with a witty sense of humor.
Reuben was predeceased by his wife of 75 years, Ardith Ruth Simpson. He is survived by his son, Bill (Robin) of Anderson, his granddaughter Heather (Jim) Harper of Tega Cay SC; grandson William Clint Speer and his daughter, Sydney Raegan Speer, of Anderson. He was predeceased by his parents, Holman Cleveland Speer and Lillian Allen Speer and brother, Harold.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 21, 2024, from 2:00-2:45 pm at The McDougald Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at 3:00 pm in the Chapel with Rev. Bobby Watson officiating. A private family committal will be held at M.J. Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
