Rev. Wilton Franklin Whitfield, age 87, dedicated husband to the late Lavenia Stewart Whitfield, of Anderson, S.C., died Friday, September 17, 2021, at AnMed Health Medical Center.
Born November 18, 1933, in Lavonia, G.A., he was the son of the late Leonard David Whitfield and Lune Whitfield.
He was a graduate of Forest College; Holmes Bible College; Association of Clinical Pastoral Education; S.C. State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling; Clemson University; S.C. State Department of Mental Health; and the University of S.C. in Rational Behavioral Therapy. He was an ordained Minister; mental health specialist; addictions recovery specialist; and rational behavioral therapist.
Rev. Whitfield worked for J.P. Stevens and Co. Inc. Appleton Plant as Personnel Director. He worked for 8 years at Patrick B. Harris Psychiatric Hospital as a counselor in the chaplaincy program where he originated several patient recovery programs.
He is the former pastor of the Wellington Pentecostal Holiness Church; River Heights Pentecostal Holiness Church; and The Holy Cross Pentecostal Church which he established.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran and performed two tours of duty during the Korean Conflict. He attained the rate of First Class Petty Officer in four years of active duty and received commendations for meritorious service.
Rev. Whitfield was a member of the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education and certified as a Clinical Chaplain. He received honors from the S.C. State Department of Mental Health as a counselor. He was a member of Hiram Lodge #68; the Chaplains advisory board at Patrick B. Harris Psychiatric Hospital; the Addictions Recovery Treatment Team; and Anderson County Personnel Association Vice President and President. He was a former member of the S.C. State Chamber of Commerce, and the Anderson Chamber of Commerce.
He was a member of the Holy Cross Pentecostal Holiness Church which he pastored for over 27 years.
He is survived by his sons, Steven F. Whitfield (Anita) of Greenville, S.C., and Bryon D. Whitfield of Anderson, S.C.; and sister, Betty Jo Whitfield Sears (Larry) of Anderson, S.C.
In addition to his parents, and loving wife, Lavenia, he was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Whitfield Dove.
The family will receive friends Thursday, September 23, 2021, from Noon until 1:45 p.m. at The McDougald Funeral Home. The graveside service will follow visitation at 2:30 p.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with Rev. Wayne Adams and Rev. Eddie Duncan officiating. The family requests social distancing, masks required, and please no shaking of hands.
The family will be at their respective homes.
