Shook, age 86, of 212 Heather Drive, Spartanburg, died at his residence on Sunday, March 4, 2012. Paul was born on November 20, 1925, in Troy, Ohio to the late William N. Shook and the late Iva E. Mumford Shook. He was married to the late wife Agnes L. Shook who died in 2003. He is survived by four children: Debra Shook Vidal (Dennis) of Salem, NY; David Shook (Alice) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Daniel Shook (Tina) of Spartanburg, SC and; Diane Shook Reid (Leroy) of Chapin, SC. Also surviving are two brothers: Eugene Shook and Robert Shook (Barbara), both of Troy, Ohio, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and his wife, Agnes, Paul was preceded in death by two brothers, Garnard Shook and Victor Shook.Paul was the fourth of five boys. He attended Troy public schools, graduating from Van Cleve High School in June 1943. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp in April 1943 and received an honorable discharge from the Army Air Force in November 1945. He attended Miami University, Oxford, Ohio and graduated June 1948 with a BS (business) degree. He is a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity where he served as Chapter Treasurer for two years. Paul and Agnes were married April 27, 1950, in Piqua, Ohio. He worked for national accounting firms from June 1948 to February 1956. From February 1956 to February 1985 he worked in various accounting and management positions for Essex Wire Corporation, Fort Wayne, Indiana and after moving to South Carolina, companies identified as Essex Wire; The Belton Corporation; Essex Group, a Division of United Technology; and The Belton Company.Paul and Agnes were moved to Anderson, SC in May 1959 by Essex Wire Corporation to serve as the Comptroller of a new corporation located in Belton, SC to make electronic consumer products. He served as General Manager of the company from September 1967 to June 1980. During this period he served on the Underwriter's Laboratories Industry Advisory Committees for the two consumer products the company manufactured. After retirement in February 1985, he became registered with NASD and the South Carolina Department of Insurance. He worked as an Account Executive for The Copeland Companies and as a personal financial advisor.Paul and Agnes were members of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Anderson, SC, from May 1959 to July 2000. Paul served on the committees to move the church from McDuffie Street to Cornelia Road (1963), to add the convent property (1973), and to build the Church (1988). He served on the first St. Joseph School Board (1967) and on several subsequent ones. He served the local Church on most committees utilizing his accounting/financial education and experience. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.Paul entered training for the Permanent Diaconate, September 1984, and was ordained a Permanent Deacon for the Diocese of Charleston by Bishop David B. Thompson in June, 1990 and continued to serve the Catholic faith community in Anderson and the Diocese of Charleston until July 2000.Paul served as Treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors of the Good Neighbor Cupboard, Anderson, SC from January 1987 to May 1999.Paul and his wife Agnes moved to Spartanburg, SC in July 2000 and Paul remained active in their new church, Jesus, Our Risen Savior Catholic Church. He was also active with Spartanburg Senior Center and Spartanburg Nutrition Council.There will be a prayer service held at 7 PM at Jesus Our Risen Savior Catholic Church in Spartanburg on Thursday, March 8, 2012, with visitation following until 9 PM. The Funeral Mass will be held at Jesus Our Risen Savior Catholic Church on Friday, March 9, 2012, at 11 AM. Entombment with committal service will follow at 3 PM in the mausoleum at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Anderson. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Rev. Mr. Shook may be sent to Jesus Our Risen Savior Catholic Church, 2575 Reidville Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29301, or St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1303 McLees Road, Anderson, SC 29621.
