Rex David Hurley, 87, of Anderson, SC, passed away, Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at Rainey Hospice House.
Born March 26, 1933, in Wilkes County, NC, he was the son of the late William H. Hurley and Ila Gaither Hurley. He was married to the late Betty Phillips Hurley.
Rex was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel after 21 years of dedicated service to his country. During his military career which spanned the years of 1952-1973, he was a Navigator and served during both the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. He was currently retired from West Anderson Water Company. Rex was a member of the American Legion-Anderson, the Retired Officers Association and the Reserve Officers Association. He was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church where he was a part of the Desire Sunday School Class.
He is survived by his daughters, Brenda McDonald and Annette (Marty) Fowler; grandchildren, Ty (Brittany) Standridge, Becky (Bryan) Lumpkin, Ashley (Kyle) Anderson, Amber (Jacob) DeGarmo, and Ian McDonald; and great-grandchildren, Scarlett, Mason, Willow, Lilly, Rex, and Simon.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Jake Standridge; brothers, Lionel, William Jr. "Jack", Hugh "Bud", Arnold and Max Hurley; sisters, Kyra Dancy, Juanita Woods, and Betty Jean Arney; and sons-in-law, Ricky Rochester, David Standridge, and Neal McDonald. Rex was the last surviving member of his original family.
Family and friends may pay their respects and sign the Guest Register on Saturday, January 9, 2021 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at The McDougald Funeral Home. The family will not be present during this time. The funeral service will be held Sunday, January 10, 2021 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Rev. Tom Turner officiating. Due to Covid-19, seating for the service will be limited, social distancing will be observed and masks required. The committal service with full military honors will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
