Richard David Ruhle, born June 3, 1939, in Anderson, South Carolina, passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on December 13, 2025. He was the beloved son of the late Richard Robert Ruhle and the late Sara Louise Cathcart Ruhle.
Richard was a proud graduate of Washington and Lee University, where he earned his bachelor's degree before going on to receive his Juris Doctor. Following his education, he returned to his hometown of Anderson, where he practiced law with distinction. He was admitted to practice law in South Carolina in 1963 and was later admitted to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in 1974; the U.S. Court of Military Appeals in 1975; the U.S. Court of Claims in 1976; and to the U.S. Tax Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court in 1977. Throughout his legal career, he maintained a diverse law practice and was known for his dedication, integrity, and commitment to serving his clients and community.
Richard served his community for many years as the City Attorney for the City of Anderson. He also devoted his time and expertise to serving on numerous nonprofit boards, as well as Bankers Trust. He valued family and community, and he will be remembered for his wisdom, ethics, and advocacy for justice.
He is survived by a sister, Sara Ruhle Kyle (Ted), and three nephews: Richard Milling Kyle (Jillian), Peter Henderson Kyle, and Steven Cathcart Kyle. His late sister, Deborah Ruhle Deck, is survived by three adult children: John Marion Deck Jr. , Richard Ruhle Deck (Valesa), and Anne Henderson Deck (Sean Slone). The graveside service at Old Silver Brook Cemetery will be private.
