Robbie Jean Parnell Spires, age 90, of Lowndesville, SC, loving wife of the late Harry C. Spires, Jr. until his death in February 2018, passed away Friday, February 4, 2022, at her home.
Born March 21, 1931, in Lowndesville, SC, she was the daughter of the late Thomas C. "Buck" Parnell and Eunice McCurry McCullough Parnell.
Robbie was retired from Abbeville County School Food Service. She was a member of Smyrna Methodist Church. She was active in many church committees and the town clerk of Lowndesville for 27 years. She was always active with the former Lowndesville Elementary School PTO and other fundraisers. She volunteered to organize the Lowndesville Christmas Parade and several beauty pageants. Later, she helped with fundraisers for those in need through the Lowndesville Community Center.
Robbie was well known for her cooking and that was where you could find friends, family, and extended family at any given time. Her biscuits were legendary and always in supply. If you were ever fortunate enough to eat her cooking, then you know her macaroni pie was a staple.
She is survived by her sons, Jimmy Spires of Lowndesville, SC, Troy Spires (Jim Hurt) of Atlanta, GA, and a handpicked son, Scotty Willoughby (Pam) of Iva, SC; daughters, Rhonda Newton (Rayford), and Lynn Branyon of Lowndesville, SC, Cindy Jones, and Lisa Sammons (Mark) of Abbeville, SC; sisters-in-law, Barbara Spires of Abbeville, SC, and Margie Powell of Lowndesville, SC; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and most recently, one great-great-granddaughter.
In addition to her devoted husband Harry, and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Carroll Leslie Spires; son-in-law, Mike Jones; sisters, Runette Harvey (Frank), and Willie Hanna (Ewell); brothers, Furman McCullough (Virginia), Floyd McCullough (Gladys), Clyde McCullough (Collette), and Mike McCullough.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at the residence beginning at 4:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 9, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at Smyrna Methodist Church with Rev. Scotty Willoughby, Rev. Richard Powell, and Rev. Sam Thomason officiating. Burial will follow at Smyrna Cemetery in Lowndesville, SC.
The family will be at the residence.
The family would like to thank all who loved and cared for Robbie in the last years of her declining health; Amy Gary, Turquoise Rice, Cherie Keithly, and Mr. Whitt Breazeale with Pruitt Hospice Care. A special thanks to Sam and Carol Thomason and others for their outpouring love for Robbie.
