Robert "Bob" Hall died peacefully in the care of the staff of the Rainey Hospice House early in the morning of February 17, 2015. His 88 years of life saw him go from good health to the limits associated with dementia. Unable to do the physical work that he so enjoyed, his mind would have him looking for his lost hammer and planning ways to accomplish a needed task at his work or around the house. Mr. Hall had moments of frustration when his body could not go where his mind directed him, but he kept his good humor and gentle spirit.
Mr. Hall was born the eldest son of Robert G. and Mary B. Hall in Stillwater, Oklahoma. He grew up with three brothers and two sisters. The family lived in Oklahoma, Arkansas, and for a few years in Charleston, SC. It was in the 1940s while his family lived in Charleston that he left to join the Navy. He was stationed in Washington, DC during World War II. He moved back to SC where he met Lonita Waldrop at a dance. They married on November 4, 1950. Mr. Hall spent most of his working career at J. Roy Martin Company as a sheet metal worker and roofer. His passion was being asked to make something out of sheet metal that helped someone complete a project or accomplish a task.
Mr. Hall was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jerry and his sisters Mary Jo and Betty, and he is survived by his brothers Albert and Bill. Mr. Hall will be greatly missed by his wife of 64 years. Mrs. Hall was his primary care provider during the final years as his dementia progressed, and she was mostly able to keep him in their home. Mr. Hall is also survived by his daughter Joan Sollee and her husband Wayne of Columbia, SC, and his son Randy Hall and his wife Mary Hamrick of Raleigh, NC. In addition, he is survived by four grandsons and their families and two step-granddaughters: Jimmie Brooks, wife Jennifer and children Gracie and Alston of Columbia; Russell Hall, wife Laura and children Kaitlyn and Logan of Pfafftown, NC; Jonathan Hall, wife Koren Garrity and children Delilah and Kiera Carr-Garrity of Morrisville, NC: Preston Sollee wife Sabrina and daughter Reese of Simpsonville, SC; Anna Boyer of Leicester, England; and Maria Boyer of Portland, OR.
Mr. Hall was a member of Nell Townsend Presbyterian Church. He served as a deacon and an elder for many years. He enjoyed being one of the handymen that the pastor could call on to do repairs around the church or parsonage.
A funeral service for Mr. Hall will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Reverends Jackie Arnold, Jimmy Cash and Dr. Robert Randy Hall. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends, prior to the service, on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621 and Alzheimer's Association, 4124 Clemson Boulevard, Anderson, SC, 29625
The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to all the caregivers who supported Mr. and Mrs. Hall. The team at Senior Solutions--especially Angela Davis-- and the many staff members of the in-home and in-patient care of Hospice of the Upstate provided excellent care.
