Robert Dwight "Bob" Layton, age 88, passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at the Rainey Hospice House. Born in Anderson, SC on April 17, 1928, he was the son of the late Robert Dewey Layton and the late Mary Essie Clark Layton. He graduated from Boys High in 1945 and attended Clemson University. Dwight proudly served his country in the United States Army in the Air Corps. He maintained his interest in aviation by building and flying radio-controlled airplanes. He was Past President of The Black Sheep RC Club. He retired from Owens Corning Fiberglas after 28 years of service working as metallurgist in the metal lab. He was a member of Concord Baptist Church, where he was actively involved in Operation Christmas Child. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Martha Griffin Layton; five children, Robert Thomas Layton (Mary), of Boone, NC, Mary Louise Gambrell (Greg), of Anderson, SC, Dwight David Layton (Lindy), of North Potomac, MD, Martha Ann Layton, of Anderson, SC, and John Claude Layton (Alberto Vigo), of Orlando, FL; five grandchildren, Marta Elizabeth Layton, of the Bronx, NY, Robert Holcombe Layton, of Albermarle, NC, Katie Marie Layton, of Charlotte, NC, Marisa Nicole Layton, of Baltimore, MD, and Nika Michelle Layton, of College Park, MD. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, George Clark Layton; and an infant granddaughter, Ann Louise Gambrell. The Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at 12:30 p.m. with Reverend Dr. Don Cox and Reverend Bill Parnell officiating. Interment will follow at Old Silver Brook Cemetery with Military Honors.
