Robert Willard Lovell
Robert (Bob) Willard Lovell, age 85, of Anderson, S.C., passed away suddenly on 7/13/2015. He was born on April 6th, 1930 in New Rockford, Foster county, ND to Irvie Willard Lovell and Louise Martha (Klemstein) Lovell who owned the former George A. Lovell farm south of Warwick, ND, where Robert grew up and attended school. In 1937 the Lovell family moved to Streeter, ND, and in 1938 to Courtenay, ND, where Robert graduated from Courtenay High School in 1948. He then graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1952 with a BS in Electrical Engineering (BSEE).
In 1952, Robert joined E. I. DuPont de Nemoures & Co. to help build and operate the Savannah River plant near Aiken, SC. His first assignment was at the Dana Heavy Water (Deuterium) plant near Terre Haute, IN where he worked in the field of instrumentation.
On May 9, 1953, he married Norma Jean Ekren of Kensal, ND, daughter of Haakon M. and Maybelle L. (Nelson) Ekren. Norma and Robert moved to North Augusta, SC, in 1953 where he assisted in the startup and operation of three of the plant's nuclear reactors using his instrumentation expertise. Robert eventually became involved in project management and engineering for the site and worked in all areas of the plant. They raised both of their daughters in North Augusta where both graduated from high school.
In 1974, Robert joined a Dupont commercial division to build a caustic-chlorine plant in Corpus Christi, TX. They moved to Delaware during plant design and later to Corpus Christi for plant construction and operation. In 1986, they moved to Aiken, SC, where Robert helped in the design of a computerized security system for the Savannah River plant.
Robert retired in 1990 after 38 years of engineering service, following his retirement the couple moved to Anderson, SC where he developed computer software for various uses. Bob's wife, Norma passed away in 2005, he then met Dorothy "Dot" Klatt to share the rest of his life with.
Surviving are his daughters, Vicki A. Howell of Marshville, NC; Linda M. Bankston of Midland, TX; grandsons Robert B. Howell Fort Irvin, California and Travis L. Howell, Salt Lake, Utah; granddaughter Norma T. Phillips, Las Vegas, NV; great-grandson Levis M. Howell, California; sisters Shirley A. Wilson, Bismark, ND; Betty J. Schweitzer, OR; and Carol R. Ferrill, Inglewood, CO. He will be warmly remembered as a wonderful father, grandfather , great-grandfather, friend, and husband.
The Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home on Thursday, July 16, 2015, at 3:30 p.m.
