Robert Edward Moynihan, 88, of Anderson, South Carolina, passed away on Sunday, July 30, 2017.
He was born in Batavia, New York on August 3, 1928, to the late Edward C. Moynihan and to the late Marion Eick Moynihan.
Robert attended Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, and received the degree of Bachelor of Science in 1950. He went on to Purdue University, from which he received a Ph.D. in physical chemistry in 1954.
On August 24, 1950 Robert married Patricia Ann Casey, also of Batavia.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia; children, Sheila Moynihan van den Bandt (Bert) of Woudrichem, The Netherlands, Michael Robert Moynihan (Robin) of Harrisonburg, Virginia, Patricia Colleen Moynihan Deegan (Claude) of Anderson, South Carolina, Matthew Richard Moynihan (Brian) of St. Louis, Missouri, Kevin Edward Moynihan (Karen), of Los Altos, California, Brian Thomas Moynihan (Susan) of Wellesley, Massachusetts, Kathryn Moynihan Edwards of Anderson, South Carolina, and Patrick John Moynihan (Christina) of Vero Beach, Florida; and twenty one grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Robert went to work as a research chemist at E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company in Wilmington, Delaware in 1954. In 1959, he was transferred to the DuPont Washington Works in Washington, West Virginia, and moved his family to Marietta, Ohio. He retired from DuPont as a Senior Research Associate in 1990. During his career at Dupont he was granted eight U.S. patents and made significant contributions to the development of Delrin, an engineering thermoplastic used in precision parts requiring excellent dimensional stability, and Butacite, for which one of the most significant uses is the inner layer in laminated automobile safety windshields.
Robert was an avid golfer, and he also enjoyed basketball, bowling, skiing, waterskiing, and even hopscotch tournaments and defending possession of the Oak Point Sledding Champion's Hat. He enjoyed fishing, and patiently introduced many others to the sport. He was a talented photographer, whose favorite subjects were the varied adventures of his family, which he recorded in photos, films and video. Many of these events occurred during his extensive travels with his children, or at their far-flung camps, campuses, recitals, athletic competitions, and homes.
In 1996 Robert and Patricia moved to Keowee Key, South Carolina, the site of many lively gatherings of friends and family. In 2015, he moved Summit Place in Anderson.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, August 3, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1200 Cornelia Road, Anderson, SC with Rev. Philip S. Gillespie as celebrant. A rosary service will be held at 6:00 pm Wednesday in the Chapel at The McDougald Funeral Home, followed by a family visitation until 8:00 pm.
