Born in Hartwell, GA on March 26, 1919, he was the son of the late Max and Callie Fry Powell. He is survived by three children, Teresa Powell of Greenville, SC; Bradley Dean (Gina) Powell of Atlanta, GA, and Joseph (Sheila) Powell of Anderson, SC; a sister, Ann Cole of Anderson, SC; grandchildren, Haley Harbin and Amanda Martin; and four great-grandchildren.Mr. Powell was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Dixie T. Powell and his sons; Robert Terry Powell and Stanley Neal Powell; brothers; Lloyd, Owen, Claude, Guy and Bernice Powell; and sister, Clara Kelly. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Anderson, SC. As a dedicated volunteer for Meals on Wheels, he continued to serve until his passing. As a child of the depression era, Mr. Powell learned the ethic of hard work on his family's farm and gratitude for the little things in life. Mr. Powell served with the United States Army and was a veteran of World War ll. He is officially registered by The Battle of Normandy Foundation. His name is permanently inscribed on The Wall of Liberty located in Normandy, France. On June 6, 1944, he landed at Omaha Beach during the D-Day invasion as one of the courageous Americans whose sacrifice and commitment led to the liberation of the continent of Europe during World War ll.Our father was blessed with a long life which was shared by his family and friends. After moving to Greenville, he was fortunate to meet many new friends.He held a special place in his heart for Peggy Greer, Brandi Blizzard, Michael and Tracy Dixon; their sons, Braedon and Austin, and Bob Stalnaker and his family.The Powell family expresses their sincere gratitude to The Gardens of Eastside staff for the loving care given to their father.The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, March 7, 2011 from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 12:30 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
