Mr. Robert Bennie Speares, resident of Richard M. Campbell Veteran's Nursing Home, peacefully entered into the Eternal Rest of his Lord and Savior at Rainey Hospice House on November 28, 2016. Born in Anderson, SC on April 1, 1929, he was the son of the late Homer E. Speares and Hettie Mae Biggs Speares. Rob proudly served his country in the United States Army Signal Corp, serving in Korea during the Korean War. Rob was retired from Fiber Industries in Greenville and Joseph P. Lyons Mill. He graduated from Anderson Boys High School and attended Forrest College. He played baseball for the Appleton Mill team of the Southern Textile League in his younger days and was an avid golfer as long as his health permitted. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Opal Inez Craft Speares; his loving daughter, Linda Speares Mitchell (Mike); grandchildren, Kevin and Leanne Mitchell and Robin and Stephen Roberts; great grandchildren, Lane and Sadey Mitchell and Caitlin and Lauren Roberts; and his sister, Betty Jean Burdette. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruby Craft, Sybil Gunnin, and Opal Finley; and by his brothers, Clifton "Bub" Speares, and James Speares. The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Reverend John M. Daniel officiating. Interment will follow at M.J. Dolly Cooper Veteran's Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Thursday from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
