Roy Lee Graham, Jr. at age 87 went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on March 19, 2016 following the sudden onset of a massive stroke. He is survived by his wife Mildred Ashley Graham of 56 years; three children, Gina Bielby (Steve), Wayne Terry (Kathy), and Faye Oliver (Curtis); six grandchildren and their spouses, multiple great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Jacqueline Sluder (Pete), and Joyce Burdette (David). He will be remembered by his family as being wise, loving generous, kind, encouraging and supportive. He loved spending time with his family, friends and working on his farm.
Roy never met a stranger and was a faithful, loving friend to many. He spoke often of how blessed he was by each individual friend.
Roy was raised on a family row-crop and dairy farm in the Earles Grove Community near Seneca, SC. After graduating from Clemson College in 1949, he taught agriculture for two years at Jonesville High School where his group won the SC Young Farmer Chapter of the Year.
After serving in the United States Army in Korea, he returned to South Carolina to work five years for Deering Milliken Company. But his heart was still in agriculture, and after his father's death in 1957, he returned to the family dairy farm for three years. For the next 25 years, he worked for FCX as a regional manager and as the Anderson store manager. From 1986 to 1993, he managed the Gold Kist Store in Anderson. Graham was instrumental in building four new stores and fertilizer blend plants that enabled farmers to have facilities they needed in their area. He pioneered plant food per acre, which eliminates filler in fertilizer formulas. After his retirement from Gold Kist in 1993, he worked for the Anderson County Road Commission for 15 years.
Graham served 32 years with Farmer Cooperatives in South Carolina, served as a director of the SC Cooperative Council and the SC Fertilizer Advisory Board. He was also Chairman of the Anderson County Extension Advisory Board and Secretary of the SC Family Farm Development Authority. In 1994, he was recognized as Distinguished Agriculturalist by Gold Kist.
He has been a faithful member of Concord Baptist Church in Anderson, SC for 43 years where he served many terms as a Deacon and held multiple other leadership roles. For decades, a highlight of his week was attending his Sunday School Class where he loved each member dearly.
In addition to his parents, Roy Lee Graham, Sr. and Gladys Patterson Graham, he was preceded in death by a brother, Theo Graham.
The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. at Concord Baptist Church with Reverend Bob Maucarelle officiating. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Veterans Mausoleum. The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Concord Baptist Church at 1012 Concord Rd., Anderson, SC 29621.
Roy Graham was spoken of as "a great man" and "a leader". He is and always will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
