Obituary

SAMUEL ELLIS BALL Samuel Ellis Ball of Anderson, SC passed through the Gates of Heaven on a beautiful Sunday morning, February 8, 2015. He was born July 19, 1924, to the late John M. and the late Cleo Fuller Ball. Mr. Ball is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 69 years, Barbara "Bobbie" Huff Ball; three children, Sandra and Thomas Webber of Spartanburg, Samuel Ellis Ball, Jr. of Anderson, and Susan Elaine Ball of Jackson, GA; three grandsons, Steven Craig Ball and Tammy of Wilmington, NC, Samuel Chandler Ball and Kristyn of Anderson, and Stephen Edward Webber and Allison of Boiling Springs, SC; four great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Michelle Ball, Steven Cooper Ball, Matthew Templeton Webber, and Emily Catherine Webber; one sister, Ann Watkins and husband, Clyde, of Greenville, and many special nieces and nephews. He loved his family dearly. Ellis was a World War II Veteran who proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. On the day the US Flag was raised on Iwo Jima, he was severely wounded and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a graduate of Clemson University with a degree in Textile Manufacturing and worked his entire career with the J.P. Stevens Company. He began employment in the Dunean plant and later the Appleton and Piedmont plants. In 1959 he was transferred to Jonesville, SC as superintendent and returned to Appleton in 1971 as plant manager. Mr. Ball was instrumental in developing strong family focused communities with emphasis on Boy Scout and various athletic programs. Mr. Ball was a member of First Baptist Church of Anderson. As a father, he taught his children to treat others as you want to be treated and never, ever think of yourself better than anyone else. He was a fine example of a man, a husband, father and friend. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. A very special thank you to the kind and patient care-givers: Carolyn Johnson, Tammy Maxwell, La Toya Williams, and Stephanie Wideman. Also, Interim Hospice and Dr. Jim Thomason, pastor of First Baptist Church for his compassion and love shown to our family during this difficult time. A funeral service to celebrate and honor the life of Samuel Ellis Ball will be held on Wednesday, February 11, 2015, at 12:30 p.m., at The McDougald Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Jim Thomason officiating. Interment will follow at M. J. "Dolly" Cooper Veteran's Cemetery. The family will receive friends at McDougald Funeral Home on Wednesday, from 10:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Anderson, 307 South Manning Street, Anderson, SC 29624.
