Obituary

Samuel H. Gassaway, age 88, a resident of Summit Place, formerly of 212 Wildwood Drive, Honea Path, South Carolina passed away on May 31, 2017. Born on January 29, 1929, in Honea Path, he was the son of the late Clyde G. Gassaway, Sr. and the late Maude Madden Gassaway. He was the loving and devoted husband of Olive Whittingham Gassaway until her death in 2008. Following graduation from high school, Mr. Gassaway proudly served his country in the US Navy. Mr. Gassaway was a resident of Baltimore, MD for fifty-six years. He was the co-owner of Gentlemen's Quarters Barber Shop in Owings Mills, MD. He was a member of Baltimore First Free Methodist Church for many years. After moving back to Honea Path in 2011, he was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Honea Path. Mr. Gassaway was an avid golfer, who was dedicated to his church, his family and his profession. Mr. Gassaway is survived by two daughters, Elsie States and her husband Forrest of Kittanning, PA and Debbie Monaghan and her husband Brian of Brockport, NY; one sister, Mary Catherine Hanks of Anderson, SC; five grandchildren, Kathleen Hillabush, Samuel States, Steven States, Samantha Monaghan, and Morgan Monaghan; and three great-grandchildren, Benjamin States, Carter States and Hannah Hillabush. Also surviving are several loving nieces. In addition to his parents and his wife, Mr. Gassaway is preceded in death by a brother, Clyde Gassaway, Jr. A memorial service will be held, Saturday, July 29th at 11:00am at Baltimore First Free Methodist Church.
