Sara Wilson Stegall, 98, of Anderson, SC, peacefully passed away Friday, April 18, 2025, at the Rainey Hospice House surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Greenville, SC on June 15, 1926, and was a daughter of the late Henry Grady Wilson and the late Sadie Ammons Wilson. She was also predeceased by her husband, John Felix Stegall; sister, Henrietta McDowell; brothers, J.D. Wilson, James Wilson, and Bob Wilson; and grandson, James Leonard Mitchell, Jr. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
After high school graduation, at the age of 17, Sara Stegall joined the US Army Nurse Corps and began her studies to become a Registered Nurse. She lived in the Anderson Memorial Hospital Dormitory among many other young nursing students and graduated in 1946. As a Registered Nurse she began a career that would last over 40 years and included working with Anderson pediatricians such as Dr. S. H. Haddock and Dr. S.T. Haddock. Mrs. Stegall also worked for several years as Head Nurse of Pediatrics at Anderson County Hospital. She is remembered by many Anderson residents for her unfailing care and compassion.
Mrs. Stegall was devoted to her family and to her church. As a young child she began attending Belton Presbyterian Church and was a faithful member who participated in church events. She also was known for her sense of humor. She loved to laugh, and her witty remarks kept others laughing as well.
She is survived by her son, John T. "Tommy" Stegall, and his wife Cathy; daughter, Peggy S. Heckler; and her husband Dennis; grandson, John Ryan Mitchell, and his wife Lee Ann; granddaughter, Melody Roberts, and her husband, Timmy; granddaughter, Ember Chandler, and her husband Shane; great grandson Spencer Mitchell; nine great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm at Belton Presbyterian Church. The funeral service will be at 2:00 pm at the church with Reverend Will DeLaney officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
