Donovan "Shayne" Trueland, 28, went to be with our Lord on June 24, 2020. Shayne fought a heroin addiction and was homeless for the last few years, but he was so much more than that. He was a son, a brother, a cousin, an uncle, a friend, a child of God. He was the toddler telling jokes from his highchair, the cutest scarecrow at Halloween. He was the little boy (always the comedian) who loved camping, loved animals and was beaming on the day he was baptized. He was the boy who could beat most video games and could disassemble and reassemble anything electronic. He was the teenager who was quiet, but when he spoke, you know he had been listening to every word. He was the young man who lived in a camper in the middle of nowhere for 3 months and bought a car with his savings. He had dreams, he loved and wanted to love again, he wanted to find his place in the world. He was the man who, despite his circumstances, helped occupants after a car accident, found a lost credit card and returned it to its rightful owner, and still loved ice cream. Shayne was fearless, he had a big heart and he is loved by many.
Despite many pleas from our family, Shayne refused treatment and rehab. He thought he could beat it on his own, but the addiction proved him wrong again and again. Even though he wasn't ready for help, Shayne wanted to help others, by the grace of God. He sent 4 or 5 people to Favor in Anderson and told them "tell them Shayne sent you."
We feared Shayne would be taken from us by (another) overdose and that thought was too much to bear, but we had no idea of the other effects that a heroin addiction could cause. He did not pass due to an overdose - his body was ravaged by MRSA, on his spine, in his heart, his legs, his lungs - all stemming from IV drug use.
Our family prays that our tragedy will help others to better understand addiction and will encourage someone else to get help before it's too late. If we talk more openly about addiction before it kills, more people will be supportive and not dismissive, and maybe those who are struggling will be more willing to get help if they know they have a wider circle of support and love.
We're so grateful to the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff at AnMed who lovingly cared for Shayne over the last 2 weeks.
The family will host a celebration of life on Saturday, June 27, 2020 at 3:00 pm at Crossover Community Church. Shayne is survived by his parents, Donald Trueland, Jr. and Katie Vinson Trueland; siblings, Patrick Burdine (Riza), Heather Caruso (Eddie), Carol Collins (Mike), Pam Trueland and Kevin Trueland, III (Bridget); grandparents, Don and Ruth Trueland; and many extended family.
He was predeceased by his grandparents, J.T. and Gladys Vinson.
In lieu of flowers, please send your gifts to Favor Anderson in memory of Shayne Trueland so that he can continue helping others. FAVOR Anderson, PO Box 2414, Anderson, SC 29622.
